Remember the smokey PSI400 haze period? I strategised miltary-styled when to put on our super grade face mask whenever we had to leave the purified air at home. And what did we do in the car? We removed the face mask. But there was always a nagging worry in my mind about air quality in the car. It looks clearer than outdoor air, but how much cleaner is it? There were good news and bad news that came out of the researched I felt impelled to do.
The good news is, our cars have air filters that reduces air pollution to some extent.
The bad news are:
1. Even the best inbuilt air filters can only filter down to about 0.3 microns (per my research, please correct me if you know better), and even if they could filter down air pollution to the tinest micron, they work too slowly to be able to clean the air inside your car to a sufficient amount before you reach your destination within Singapore.
2. There are more pollutants and cancer causing substances in the air within our car, then there are on a normal day outdoors, and we can’t remove the sources of these pollutants because they come from the following souces which we can not remove from our cars, such as Carbon Monoxide and exhaust fumes from other cars, particulate allergens like dust, mold, pollen and bacteria and cancer-causing substances from found in air fresheners, cigarette smoke and certain interior upholstery.
You know that smell you get from a new car or a car that is parked under the sun for some time? The smell is mostly organic compounds in the vehicle off-gassing from anything that is vinyl or plastic in the car.
In short, door air quality is not as clean as we think.
3M™ Vehicle Air Purifier Plus
To validate my research I attended a session by Prof. Phillip Eng, a Senior Consultant Respiratory Physician and Associate Professor of Medicine, NUS, organized by 3M and I received affirmation of the same. According to 3M, studies have shown that passengers inside vehicles are nine to 12 times more exposed to air pollution2 than outside air along the same stretch of route.
Via an advanced four-layer filtration system, the 3M™ Vehicle Air Purifier Plus can filter out 99 percent of cancer causing substances, pollution and respiratory allergens from sources that are unavoidable in our cars, including PM2.5 particles. The bonus for me is that it was made to remove odour from food, sweat and other stale smells, which can be nauseating and may cause motion sickness.
Ease of Use
Absolutely easy to use. First decide where you want the air purifier to be, then plug in and play.
The air purifier can be secured to back rests with the strap provided. It stays put even when there I weave through different traffic conditions.
The cable provided is 5 metres long, it was sufficient for me to secure the air purifier at back of the middle row in our 7 seater
How it works
The color of the curved bar indicates current air quality in the car.
The color of the “on button” indicates the mode which the air purifier is working at at the moment.
The 3M™ Vehicle Air Purifier Plus is also equipped with a smart sensor panel that automatically adjusts the purification rate based on the air quality within the car. For optimal use, the filter replacement indicator provides a reminder when it is time to change the filter cartridge.
Remember the fact about how inbuilt car filters won’t be able to clean air in time before you reach your destination? During the event with 3M, I saw with my own eyes how the 3M™ Vehicle Air Purifier Plus cleaned a space the size of a carton box in seconds (live video available on my instagram stories).
If you want to read about the technology
Made from permanently charged polymer fibres, the first layer of the filter attracts and captures hair and larger particles, while the second layer traps unwanted micro-particles like Particulate Matter (PM)2.5 particles. Odours from food and sweat, and harmful compounds are also removed from the air as they pass through the latter layers.
3M Electrostatic Electret Technology, which captures hair, pet dander and other large dust particles. PM2.5 particles are filtered out through 3M Non-Woven Technology while odour and harmful volatile organic compounds are removed via catalytic activated carbon. The 3M™ Vehicle Air Purifier Plus also features high formaldehyde removal, which effectively removes the cancer-causing carcinogen.
The device is able to remove, in a matter of minutes:
● Up to 99% of dust, pet dander and PM2.5 particles
● Up to 93% of harmful gases in your car
● Bad odor caused by food, sweat and other sources
