My Laundry System | No more laundry sitting on the sofa

I don’t like cleaned laundry on the sofa and I don’t like to put aside housework till later because it gets harder to get myself to work on it. After a few rounds of laundry, I discovered that the way to help me prevent laundry from occupying real estate on my sofa – by doing it at the right time and in the most convenient way.

The Right Time

The right time to deal with dried laundry for me is when I see that clean laundry has dried or when the next load of laundry needs to occupy the space, usually the latter. It made sense to me to make it a habit to hang up wet, cleaned laundry in such a way that it helps with returning dried laundry to our wardrobe.

The Most Convenient Way

I removed the things that makes me procrastinate to return dried laundry right away, namely, having to return hangers and pegs to the laundry room that were used to hang up clothing to be folded in the  wardrobe.

I hung up Joy’s clothing further away from where I’m collecting the laundry, because I deal with the adult’s clothing first since they belong in the same room.

All clothing are hung up according to whether they are to be returned to our wardrobes hanged or folded. I am right handed, so I put those to be folded to the right and those to be hanged to the left for ease. If you are left handed, you can totally do the other way round.

The purpose is so that my hands are free in the first instance to remove pegs and hangers from clothing to be folded in the wardrobe and I don’t need to return hangers and pegs to the laundry room.

  • my right hand does the collection of clothing from the rack
  • all clothing to be folded in the wardrobe are gathered on my left arm, so that my left hand is free

  • My right hand collects hangers the remaining hangers of clothing to be hang up in the wardrobe
  • my left free hand holds the hangers of the clothing to be hanged up in the wardrobe.

When everything is done, if there are pegs on the hangers of clothing to be hanged up in the wardrobe, I remove them with my free right hand. And that’s it. Just proceed to each room, hang up clothing to be hung up and then fold the rest swiftly.

Make it a habit and there will be no more cleaned laundry waiting for you on the sofa.

Let me finish up on the Laundry Room. How about a post of choosing your washing machine next? :D
