Book Review : Keep Calm & Mother On by Pauline Loh [ Giveaway Completed! ]

Pauline Loh, an award winning local writer with over 25 years of writing experience has put together Keep Calm and Mother On, a book filled with over 300 interesting things ever said about motherhood. Like a mother, I read this book of quotes when I had small pockets of time in between mothering. Since it is a book of quotes, it’s easy to stop as and when I need to and continue when I can.

I love quotes (heres a post filled with quotes) because they convey so much with so little. The quotes in this book are categorized by different aspects of motherhood namely, loving, sacrificial, brave, powerful, encouraging, beautiful, noble, magical and funny – the categories are mostly helpful to put these quotes into perspective but sometimes, I feel like they didn’t quite fit, although it didn’t hinder my overall enjoyment of the book very much.

I found some of my favourite quotes in there and enjoyed others very much. I didn’t quite like those that paint an impossibly perfect picture of motherhood, or those which put mothers on a pedestal but luckily there are not too many. Here are some of my favourite quotes from each aspect of motherhood from Keep Calm and Mother On to share.

Loving Things in Motherhood

Not flesh of my flesh,
Nor bone of my bone,
But still miraculously my own.
Never forget for a single minute,
You didn’t grow under my heart,
But in it.
– A poem on adoption by Fleur Conkling Heyliger

Sacrifices in Motherhood

The phrase ‘working mother’ is redundant.
– Jane Sellman, writer

Bravery in Motherhood

I’d like to be the ideal mother, but I’m too busy raising my kids.
– Anonymous

Power of Motherhood

My mother is my root, my foundation. She planted the seed that I base my life on, and that is the belief that the ability to achieve starts in your mind.
– Michael Jordan, former professional basketball player and entrepreneur

Encouraging Things About Motherhood

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
– Fred Rogers, host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood
(A side note: This one is one of my favourite quotes!)

Beautiful Things About Motherhood

I think my life began with waking up and loving my mother’s face.
– George Eliot, author

I thought my mom’s whole purpose was to be my mom. That’s how she made me feel.
– Natasha Gregson Wagner, actress

There’s so much emotions going through my head, so much excitement. I guess I just want to see my mom.
– Michael Phelps on winning his eighth gold medal in the Olympic Games 2008

Noble Things About Motherhood

But there’s a story behind everything. How a picture got on a wall. How a scar got on your face. Sometimes the stories are simple, and sometimes they are hard and heartbreaking. But behind all your stories is always your mother’s story, because hers is where yours begins.
– Mitch Albom, author of For One More Day

And she, the new mother of a daughter, felt a fierceness come over her that seized at her heart, that made her feel as if her bones were turned into steel, as if she could turn herself into a weapon to keep this daughter of hers from having to be hurt by the world outside the ring of her arms.
– Lauren Groff, novelist

Magical Things About Motherhood

“There is no death, daughter. People die only when we forget them,” my mother explained shortly before she left me. “If you can remember me, I will be with you always.”
– Isabel Allende, author of Eva Luna

Funny Things About Motherhood

A little boy forgot his lines in a Sunday school presentation. His mother whispered the cue, “I am the light of the world.” The child beamed and with great feeling and a loud clear voice said, “My mother is the light of the world.”

Sweater, n.: garment worn by child when its mother is feeling chilly.
– Ambrose Bierce, journalist

Just about the time a woman thinks her work is done, she becomes a grandmother.
